How it works

The trunk and Panopticum OS

The box, the stick, one-command installation, updates.

In all apps 2 min read

The Panopticum OS installation menu and its setup page are in Russian for now.

What it is

A trunk is a small box on the customer’s site running Panopticum OS. It finds the cameras on the local network, takes their video and sends it to the server by itself. The box always opens the connection, so a public IP, port forwarding and router setup are not needed. Every 30 seconds the trunk checks in and receives commands in reply.

Hardware

An HDMI stick or a mini PC with an x86 processor will do. We pick the model and the number of cameras per box for the site. Panopticum OS can also be installed on a computer that already runs Debian or Ubuntu.

Installing from a USB drive

  1. Write the Panopticum OS image to a USB drive and boot from it.
  2. The installation menu appears on the screen. Choose the disk: the drive you booted from is not listed, and erasing is confirmed with a separate key.
  3. Enter the site key we gave you.
  4. After a reboot, the box comes online and appears in our panel.

Wi-Fi on site

If there is no cable, the box raises its own “Panopticum-XXXX” access point. Each box has its own password, shown on its screen. Connect to the access point from a phone, choose the site’s network and enter its password. If the password is wrong, the setup access point comes back and you can try again.

One command on your own computer

On a ready machine with Debian or Ubuntu, run the command with your key. It does not touch partitions, the boot loader or data.

curl -fsSL https://panopticum-smart-vision.ru/trunk.sh | sudo bash -s -- KEY

After installation

  • The trunk scans the network and finds cameras over ONVIF, including the stream address if it is non-standard.
  • The chosen cameras appear on your video wall like any others.
  • PTZ cameras can be steered with the PTZ control.
  • Updates arrive over the air, and if a new version does not come online, the box returns to the previous one.
  • After the box reboots, the streams come back by themselves.
