Smart Gate reads plates with a three-digit region code

A new recognition model and three reads of every plate box: 80 times more correct reads of nine-character plates.

Plates with a three-digit region code used to be read one character short: “190” became “19”. The cause turned out to be the recognition model itself, which was built for European plates.

  • The model was chosen by testing on 4,893 Russian plates
  • Every plate box is read three times with different margins
  • Clutter that looks like a plate is rejected by the shape of its box before reading

The share of correct reads of nine-character plates from a single crop rose from 0.8% to 64.4%, and over several frames of a passage the plate is read with confidence. Installation now has a rule: the plate must be at least 120 pixels wide in the frame.
